The Usual Suspects
I have figured out why I like this movie so much. I suspect it's also why every other guy in the world likes this movie so much. I want to be Keyser Soze. I'd bet that the character was not meant to be liked. He kills his own family members, as well as the movie's main lovable charismatic characters. He even tricks the audience badly enough to cause Roger Ebert to give the movie 1.5 stars out of 4. But I don't hate him. I want to be him. Just like I wanted to be Superman in 1986, Batman in 1989, and Neo in 1999.
I want to be Keyser Soze because he is smart and powerful enough to do whatever he wants. It's a bit disturbing that Soze is a hero and a role model. He is a ruthless cold-blooded killer who does not care about anything. In the same way that I, like many others, would want to be Tony Soprano, it's strange that today, there are heroes who are utterly villainous people.
(Interesting tidbit from the director's commentary. "Soze" is Hungarian for "verbal," as in Verbal Kint.)
